Another Step Into the Deep

There is a wind,
You may feel it blowing now
A bright, curling thing
Resting so lightly
Upon your fevered brow.

You and I,
We are one
Are all of us
Made from the selfsame dust
Oh lord,
Sweet sad humans
If not us
Then who can we trust?

Come and go,
Be at peace
Rest your eyes
Stretch your legs a piece
Run out your hearts dreams
Until panting in exhaustion
You find at last
Something in which
To believe.

Sleeping in the forest

I thought the earth remembered me, she
took me back so tenderly, arranging
her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds. I slept
as never before, a stone
on the riverbed, nothing
between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated
light as moths among the branches
of the perfect trees. All night
I heard the small kingdoms breathing
around me, the insects, and the birds
who do their work in the darkness. All night
I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling
with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

A love that lights the whole sky

Even after all this time,
the Sun never says
to the earth, ‘You owe me.'

Look what happens
with a love like that.
It lights the whole sky.
